the other side of Carnaval!

seeing someone being stabbed, knife to the hilt in a guys back, was not the most joyous of occasions and it brings home the fact that like anywhere there can be trouble, i suspect there was a lot more than i saw.

i don’t know what drug it was but many of the guys were out of their heads and were sniffing something from a rag, i didn’t stop to ask but general waft was one of solvent…

it is also pretty clear that idea of having a partner at carnival time is a source of trouble hence why many people break up for carnival, apparently some people also use it as an excuse to bump their partner off!

Yes, not a great experience I’m sure Matt, but certainly a window into the lives of many people in the poorer communities here. Sadly some people do see some things like this when living in these sorts of places and its a quick reminder that many people have a very different existence to us. And how shocking it must have been to see two people in the community have this sort of encounter. I guess all I can say is something like this will never happen to you as long as you follow the TIE programme, stay with the contacts we provide you, and don’t initiate any conflict with people (or take part in gang-like activities!). Staying well away from this sort of stuff is my advice! But you live in Brixton - so I’m sure you know what to do and what not to do…and may have already experienced something similar in London!

So looking forward to seeing you tomorrow and hearing all of the stories in person. And - HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR TOMORROW!!!

for those that might be worried by the incident etc. I can honestly say that I have not felt more safe than with the setup here in Brazil. the incident took place in a local town and not in the communities, they were drunk and at carnival, as we know from london carnival in that kind of melting pot these things happen.

i for one have a greater fear of nature than man right now, my back is peeling from my burns good and proper, mmmm nice
